Walking the Sacred Ground

An Extended Guide to Nepal’s Buddhist Heritage

The Terai plains of southern Nepal hold one of the most profound concentrations of sacred memory on earth. In a corridor stretching not much more than 150 kilometres, the Buddhist tradition was born, took its first steps, turned its face away from the world, and returned — changed beyond recognition — to meet that world again. This is the country of Siddhartha’s childhood, his renunciation, and his great homecoming. It is also the ground where his family lived, where his clan was later lost, and where the relics of his body were carried and kept.

Most visitors arrive in Lumbini and see the Sacred Garden, the Maya Devi Temple, the monasteries. Fewer venture into the wider circuit — to Devadaha where the royal women of his line were born, to Kudan where the father met the awakened son, to Sagarhawa where that same clan was destroyed, or to Ramgram where the only untouched portion of the Buddha’s mortal remains still rests under a silent mound of earth.

This guide is written for those who wish to go further. It is a document of places, holy days, and practical information — written in the belief that knowing the story of a place changes what you feel when you stand inside it.

The sites described here surround Lumbini within a radius of roughly 100 kilometres and are grouped within Nepal’s Lumbini Province. They are best visited in combination with the central Lumbini complex, ideally across two or three days, with a local guide who knows the significance of each location.
